- In Australia we have laws covering de facto relationships and basically if you live together for 2 years or live together with a child then you have almost exactly the same rights / obligations as if you're married. But people still get married. It's been dropping over the past few years - as I hear it has been in the USA as well - but it still remains an important social / cultural / religious tradition for some people. I think it should be a choice, if the legal or ceremonial aspects of it is important to people, they should be allowed to make that choice. In the USA it seems the laws on common law marriages are very different so it does seem safer to get married - there are things other than insurance right?
