a significant other is there really any reason for couples to get married? it used to be people got married for insurance and to give the children the same names, etc, but now everyone just does what ever so is marriage really needed aside from doing it as a religious ceremony? Should only people who practice their religion get married while all others just list each other as significant others and not actually marry? Is that how the future will be? People being commited to each other and living together but not married?- In Australia we have laws covering de facto relationships and basically if you live together for 2 years or live together with a child then you have almost exactly the same rights / obligations as if you're married. But people still get married. It's been dropping over the past few years - as I hear it has been in the USA as well - but it still remains an important social / cultural / religious tradition for some people. I think it should be a choice, if the legal or ceremonial aspects of it is important to people, they should be allowed to make that choice. In the USA it seems the laws on common law marriages are very different so it does seem safer to get married - there are things other than insurance right?
